A letter from the general secretary...

How About a Drink?
By David Adams

If you are thirsty and your mouth dry, can you imagine yourself drinking an ice cold orange Nehi soda, a thick chocolate milk shake, or even a frosty root beer? Have you ever been hiking and realized you were parched as you passed a cold mountain stream, and then bent down to scoop up some refreshingly cold water? When working outside all afternoon, at what point do you realize you are in need of liquid refreshment before you pass out?

Markets offer a diverse variety of options. One can find different flavors of drinks, hot or cold drinks, and small to very large drinks to quench our thirsts. Amazing to me today is the popularity of bottled water. Who would have ever imagined anybody selling that? We have unlimited access to fluids to satisfy our human need for drink. But all of us who drink these things will find ourselves thirsty again. In the story about the Samaritan woman she came to draw water from a well. Jesus asked her for a drink and said, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water (John 4:10).” Jesus concludes by saying “those who drink from the water that I will give them will never be thirsty (John 4:13).” Her response was very much like ours when she said, “Where do you get that living water (John 4:11)?”

The very essence of UM Men since our beginning is to offer “living water” to all men, assisting them to become disciples of Jesus Christ. We are about helping men to grow in Christ that others may know Christ. This year we are celebrating our 100th anniversary as a ministry of men for the Methodist Church. UM Men are making a difference. Where other men’s ministries have come and gone, UM Men have been steadfast, affecting the lives of men around the world. There are literally thousands of stories that could be shared about the transformation of men. The General Commission of United Methodist Men is not a program but an agency that offers spiritual growth processes. We are not an institution, but a ministry where men and boys can connect to build a relationship with Jesus Christ and with each other.
